Removing a Decaying Stump
How Long Will It Take to Rot If You Don’t Get a Tree Stump Ground?
If you have a tree stump, it’s a good idea to get it ground and out of your way. These unsightly, unusable wood blocks can be a nuisance, a safety hazard, and a source of disease and pests.
Whether you want to plant a new tree in the spot, or you simply want to remove the stump, there are a few ways you can go about the process. Some of these methods are more expensive than others, but they can help you save money in the long run.
Cutting the stump
Cutting the stump down close to the ground can speed up the rotting process. You can do this by using a chainsaw or handsaw. This will ensure that you’re cutting the wood directly at ground level, reducing the number of chemicals you need to use. It also encourages the root system to decompose.
Nutrients
Alternatively, you can add nutrients to the stump. Commercial fertilizers with high nitrogen are a good choice. The microbes in the soil will need this extra nitrogen to break down the wood.
Using rock salt or Epsom salt can also be a good alternative. While it doesn’t have nearly as much nitrogen as fertilizer, it has similar dissolving properties.
Extra tip
Another good method for promoting the rotting process is to plant flower bulbs around the stump. A small tree will often take away nutrients from nearby plants, so it’s best to plant something to replace the lost nutrients.
Keeping the stump damp is another important step. Dry weather makes it thirsty and soaking it in water can help the chemical reaction dissolve the wood.
