A Professional Nutritionist
A nutritionist is someone who advises their clients on healthy eating. Nutritionists are usually health professionals, and they may be registered dieticians, or RDNs. Whatever the case, they have expertise in a specific field of food and nutrition.
When you ask your friends, family members, and even acquaintances for a referral for a nutritionist, you’re probably met with looks of confusion and an awkward silence. “A what?” They might say, before finally offering up the name of someone they once had a one-off appointment with at their own doctor’s office. That’s not what you want, though—you want the best nutritionist in town.
Trained in Giving Advice on Diet and Nutrition
A nutritionist is a health professional who is trained in giving advice on diet and nutrition. In most states and countries, a person who wants to become a licensed nutritionist must complete a four-year bachelor’s degree program in food and nutrition with courses in biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, chemistry, microbiology, public health, and human nutrition. Because the field of nutrition is so broad, many people specialize in a particular area of study after graduation—some work with older adults on issues related to kidney function and healthy weight management, while others assist pregnant women with prenatal care.
