Step 1: Understand What Anxiety Actually Is in Order to Remove It

Anxiety controls us by playing on our fear of the unknown. Part of what’s so scary about anxiety is a lack of understanding of anxiety itself. We’re afraid of what we don’t understand—so coming to understand and accept anxiety for what it is is a huge first step on the road to feeling better. Then, after the danger has passed, the brain will perceive a safe environment again and we will return to the nervous system’s “resting and digesting” state, also called “parasympathetic.”

Step 2: Determine the Source of Anxiety 

This may seem obvious, but in order to remove anxiety, it’s important to determine the potential source(s) of your anxiety and eliminate or minimize them, if possible. Are you spinning your wheels too fast? Is there stress in your home environment or excess stress at work? Are important relationships in your life languishing? Do you have past trauma that plagues you? Are you scared about the future? Perhaps there’s a phobia giving you trouble that you might need professional help to overcome.

  • jumping up and down
  • going for a walk
  • identifying things you can see, hear, feel, smell and taste
  • high-intensity exercise 
  • mindfulness
  • meditation
  • journaling
  • talking with a trusted family member or friend

Not every strategy will work for everyone. Some people find mindfulness or meditation too quiet and reflective when they’re feeling so wired and stressed, and may feel better doing some intense exercise to help process the adrenaline and cortisol. Others may need alone time to be still and reflective, while others may feel calmer in the tight embrace of a loved one. Step 4: Explore Treatment Options to Remove Anxiety & Its Symptoms

MEDICATION

Though it may not seem like it, there ARE treatment options for anxiety. The most commonly used treatment is antidepressant medication, but many doctors will admit that it’s not a good option for many patients, and it certainly doesn’t help everyone. Doctors may prescribe short-term Benzodiazepines in extreme cases. Unfortunately, these are dangerous, controlled substances, and don’t even begin to address the underlying cause of anxiety. Due to their risks, they are only supposed to be used for a short period of time (2 weeks to 1 month). Even within that timeframe, they can cause dependency, as their sedative effect is extremely addictive.

TALK THERAPY AND EMDR 

Another commonly recommended treatment is talk therapy, which may be helpful for many people. However, it doesn’t work for everyone—and it may take months or years of trial and error to find the right therapist for you. 

EMDR (eye movement desensitization reprocessing) may also be extremely helpful, especially in instances where past trauma is involved. Talk to your therapist about trying this extremely well-researched therapy.

HOLISTIC MODALITIES 

We recommend seeking out alternative and holistic options like chiropractic care, acupuncture, massage therapy, and emotional clearing techniques.
