What to Know: Planting a Tree
What Do I Need to Know Before I Plant a Tree?
The first thing you must do before planting a tree is to choose the right tree for your area. Your tree’s size and shape can have an enormous impact on its health and longevity. Planting a wrongly chosen tree can create serious problems later on.
Type of Tree
Depending on the type of tree you are planting, you may need to fertilize it once it’s established. Make sure you plant it in a location that gets plenty of sunlight. Also, ensure that the soil is properly drained. If you’re not sure, it’s a good idea to ask your local nursery or arborist.
Planting a Tree
When you’re ready to plant, make sure you dig a hole that’s deep enough to hold the root ball. You should also make it wide enough to accommodate the wire basket or burlap.
Avoiding root competition
To avoid root competition, use mulch around the base of the tree. Keep the mulch at least a few inches away from the tree’s trunk. This will help insulate the roots and keep out weeds. It should also cover the tree’s drip line.
The depth of the hole should be at least two to three times the diameter of the root ball. This will allow you to position the trunk base in the right place.
Mulch
The mulch should be placed in a donut-like shape. A thick layer of mulch will help insulate the tree from the cold and heat of winter.
The mulch should be placed on top of a layer of soluble fertilizers. These nutrients will help in the establishment of the tree’s root system.
