Types of Trees for Use in Woodworking and Carpentry

There are many different types of trees for use in woodworking and carpentry. Knowing the various defects that may occur in a particular type of timber will help you select the right piece for your project. Whether it is a piece of furniture or a cabinet, you want to choose a wood that will last.

Defects of wood

In the woodworking community, the term “defect” refers to any flaw in a piece of timber. These can include natural or acquired defects. The most common are insect damage, fungal attack, and rapid tree growth. However, these are not the only factors that can cause wood defects.

Teak

One of the hardest natural woods is teak. This wood is also resistant to frost and snow. The color of this wood is rich and dark golden brown when sealed.

Other types of wood

Other hardwoods that are considered to be hard and durable include oak, maple, and birch. Among these, birch plywood is affordable and stable.

Timbers

Some of the best-looking timbers are those that are newly cut. A freshly cut piece of timber can also give off a sweet, fresh aroma.

The grain of the lumber can vary from straight to curved. This is a good sign of high-quality wood. Ideally, a piece of wood should have a vertical grain pattern.

Having a vertical grain helps to reduce movement in the finished product. Raised grain can also occur. This can result from wind or frost stress. When a board curves in length or width, it is called a “spring.”

Other defects are caused by incorrect sawing or handling. Wood with twisted fibers is not suitable for sawing.
