Properly Trim a Tree
How Do I Properly Trim a Tree?
Using proper techniques for pruning a tree is important for many reasons. It can improve the appearance of the plant and increase air circulation. It can also help prevent decay.
Steps of Tree-Trimming
First:
The first step in pruning a tree is to remove branches that are too close together. You should avoid removing more than one-fourth of the living crown of the tree at a time.
Second:
The second step is to remove weak angles in the tree. A weak angle is an angle that does not strengthen the structure of the tree. For example, a weak V-shape juncture may break off in a windstorm. You should also remove suckers from the tree’s roots.
Third:
The third and final step is to cut away the remaining stub. The cut should be made at a 45-degree angle from the base of the tree. This ensures that water does not collect in the wound and allows for the quick formation of a callus.
Pruning Branches
A good rule of thumb is to never prune branches that are more than ten centimeters in diameter. If you do decide to prune large branches, do so only for a legitimate reason. It is a good idea to consult a certified arborist before beginning any pruning project.
Depending on the species, you may need to trim small ornamental trees by cutting the end portions of limbs between one-half and three-quarters of their diameter. When you are doing this, make sure to watch the tree closely.
