Tube feeding can be necessary for a variety of reasons. People may need it when their digestive abilities are compromised, they cannot eat properly, or their caloric needs are too large. There are six main types of feeding tubes. The type of tube used depends on the size of the patient’s intestines and digestive capabilities.
Jejunal feeding may be indicated if there is a problem with gastric reflux or delayed gastric emptying
Jejunal feeding is a procedure that involves inserting a tube into the jejunum and allowing the patient to eat. It may be indicated in the event that a patient experiences delayed gastric emptying or gastric reflux. The new feeding tube is usually placed through an incision in the skin. There are some risks, however, including a high risk of misplacement of the feeding tube.
Jejunal feeding is not a permanent solution for delayed gastric emptying or gastric reflux. Jejunal feeding requires the support of a dietitian and a healthcare provider.
Sinusitis is an important complication
If your child is receiving tube feeding, you should be aware of the potential complication of sinusitis. This condition is often triggered by pressure in the face or forehead. It can be treated with OTC medications. If antibiotics are not effective, your doctor may recommend surgery. This procedure entails placing a camera-equipped probe into the sinus cavity and widening the natural drainage pathways. This can help decrease congestion and prevent infection. Some cases of acute bacterial sinusitis can lead to abscesses near the eye or brain.
An infection of the paranasal sinuses can cause inflammation and obstruction of the mucus flow. Infection, anatomic abnormalities, and nasogastric tubes may contribute to this obstruction. Patients receiving tube feeding have a higher risk of developing sinusitis because of this.
Tube feeding may cause clogging or inadvertent dislodgement
Clogging of feeding tubes is a common problem, which prevents the proper delivery of nutrients. It affects ten percent to thirty percent of tube users. Clogging is more common in smaller-bore tubes. Clogging can be avoided by flushing the tube frequently with water. This helps avoid residual volume or medication from clogging the tube.
Patients can dislodge feeding tubes accidentally, especially if they’re restless and confused. Taping the tube to the patient’s nose can help prevent inadvertent dislodgment, but it’s not foolproof. The most common method of securement is the bridle technique. This technique involves attaching the feeding tube to the tubing at the back of the nasopharynx.
