Is it Unhealthy to Get Less Sleep
Is it Unhealthy to Get 4 Hours of Sleep?
Sleep is an important function for the body. It helps to control blood pressure, sugar levels and hormone production. But not getting enough sleep can affect your mental and emotional state. Insufficient sleep can lead to stress, anxiety, depression, and memory problems. And it can even increase your risk of heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and a host of other chronic illnesses.
Studies
Studies show that people who have short sleep cycles have a higher risk of developing some of the most common diseases. These include stroke, depression, cancer, and diabetes. People who sleep less than seven hours per night at age 50 have a 30% greater risk of developing a chronic illness than those who slept nine or more hours.
Research also shows that sleep deprivation can cause microsleep, when the body is asleep during the day. This can be dangerous if the person is driving, operating heavy machinery, or performing other tasks that require coordination and precision.
Health effects
Many people have become concerned about the health consequences of not getting enough sleep. While some people may be natural short sleepers, it isn’t normal to be this way. There is a mutation in the CED2 gene that causes shortened sleep cycles in a small segment of the population.
Consult a professional
As with any medical condition, if you are experiencing sleep problems, consult a doctor. There are many treatments available for a number of sleep disorders, including medications, cognitive behavioral therapy, and alternative therapies. If you are experiencing insomnia, try using relaxation techniques and guided imagery to help you fall asleep.
