How Energy Drinks Cause Insomnia

Can Energy Drinks Cause Insomnia?

Energy drinks are a popular beverage among teenagers and young adults. They are often consumed in order to boost energy, and help people stay awake during video game sessions or nighttime partying. However, they can also lead to sleep disorders.

Consumption

Several studies have looked at the association between energy-drink consumption and poor sleep quality. These findings have important implications for clinicians who treat patients with sleep disturbances.

Studies

Researchers from the Raine Study evaluated sex-stratified associations between energy drink use and sleep disturbances. Participants responded to self-administered questionnaires. Their answers were used to assess the severity of sleep disturbances. Those who were more likely to have disturbed sleep were more likely to consume energy drinks.

Young women in particular are more likely to experience poor sleep, and consuming energy drinks may be more problematic for them. A study conducted by Malinauskas and colleagues found that more than half of college students consume at least one energy drink a month. Interestingly, 67% of them reported that they consumed them due to insufficient sleep.

Sleep Disorder

In addition, young adults are more likely to suffer from sleep problems than older adults. They are more susceptible to fatigue, depression, and pain. Many health conditions can also cause sleep problems, including asthma, diabetes, and cancer.

What can also cause sleep disorder

While caffeine is the main component of energy drinks, it can also contain sugar, which is known to interfere with sleep. Studies have shown that excessive sugar consumption can lead to poor sleep and increased inflammation in the body.
