Fixing a Leaning Birch Tree
How to Fix a Leaning Birch Tree
Leaning trees can be hazardous. They can cause damage to homes and property. If you see your tree leaning, it’s important to stop the process before it causes further damage.
Consult an Arborist
If you’re not sure what to do, it’s a good idea to consult a certified arborist. He or she can assess the damage and suggest treatments.
When a tree leans, it’s usually due to wet soil, storms, or heavy rains. You can prevent this problem by establishing proper drainage patterns. Also, the root system should be planted below the grade level.
Tamping down the soil
During the planting season, it’s important to tamp down the soil. This will stabilize the roots and prevent the tree from leaning. Once the roots have been tamped down, you can use stakes to support the tree.
Staking
Trees that lean a great deal may require staking. Stakes are metal or wood posts that can be driven into the ground to secure the tree. The stakes should be about five feet long. Drive the stakes in a direction opposite the leaning tree.
Protecting the tree’s bark
You may also need to take other measures to protect the tree’s bark. A foam pad or an old blanket can be placed under the tree to help protect it.
Another way to protect the tree is to tie a rag around its trunk. This will act as a padded support for any pressure or force that may be causing the bark to split.
Ask a Certified Arborist
A certified arborist can tell you whether your tree needs to be fixed or removed. Before taking action, however, you should consider the size of the tree.
