Are Obese People More Likely to Suffer From Anxiety and Depression?

Obesity and depression are associated at various levels, both in childhood and adolescence and in adulthood. These associations appear to reinforce each other, and both may be triggered by biological and environmental factors. It is therefore important to keep an open line of communication with your doctor if you think you might be suffering from either condition.

Studies

A recent systematic review of obesity-depression studies showed that the association was not as strong as expected. Several of the studies were cross-sectional, while others assessed the relationship at follow-up. Although some studies found a U-shaped relationship between body weight and depression, other studies found a negative relationship.

Compared to women, men were not found to have a high prevalence of mental illness. Nevertheless, the study participants were more likely to be depressed than other groups in the whole population.

Correlation Between Obesity and Stress

Depression is a common problem, and obese individuals are at an increased risk of developing it. Some of the mechanisms of this increase include cortisol secretion and inflammatory biomarkers. There is also a correlation between obesity and stress, which could increase the likelihood of depression.

Although there are some differences between the study designs, these studies all showed that there was a positive association between obesity and depression. However, they were not able to confirm whether this relationship is dose-related.
