Anxiety Affecting Daily Life

How Does Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation Treat Anxiety?

Among college and university students, about one-quarter of the population suffers from mental disorders, including anxiety. Anxiety disorder is overrepresented in students who drop out of classes or self-harm. Anxiety disorders are also associated with high rates of suicide.

Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation

Micro-current electrical stimulation (CES) has been shown to be effective in treating depressed mood and insomnia. It involves applying a weak pulsed electrical current to the scalp. It is believed that CES can alter the default-mode network (DMN), which processes anxiety. A small change in the DMN leads to sustained changes in the resting state of the brain. It is thought that CES can be used as a standalone treatment or in combination with other therapies.

Effects of CES on Anxiety

A randomized, controlled trial was conducted to determine the effects of CES on anxiety. A total of 182 patients were treated. The study involved two groups: active CES and sham CES. The patients were assessed using the HAM-A, HAM-D, HADS, EDR, STAI, CES-D, and VAS. The scores were analyzed using paired t-tests. The results showed that the scores decreased three times more in the active CES group than in the sham CES group.

National Health Service

The study was conducted at a nurse-led clinic that was part of the National Health Service in England. It was administered to patients with severe generalized anxiety disorder. The average age of the participants was 35.6 years. A baseline was taken before the first therapy session. The participants were given individual CBT and an offer of sertraline.
