Are There Any Health Benefits to Calorie Restriction?

Until now, scientists have largely been unable to answer the question of whether calorie restriction improves human health. However, there are some promising studies that have shown the potential benefits of a restricted-calorie diet, including a longer life span and better cardiovascular health. In the meantime, you should always consult with a doctor or dietitian before trying any diet, especially if you have health concerns.

Clinical trial

A clinical trial at the National Institute on Aging (NIA) supported by the National Institute on Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) tested whether calorie restriction has long-term benefits. In this study, the researchers randomly assigned 218 healthy, normal-weight adults to an eating pattern similar to that of a control group. They also asked a portion of the participants to reduce their calorie intake by 14 percent over two years. In addition to measuring their body weight, researchers also measured the participants’ energy intake and the amount of fat and cholesterol they consumed.

Immune system

In addition to reducing their body weight, the study participants also had reduced fat and cholesterol levels. The researchers also found that their immune systems performed better. Researchers noted that the participants’ immune cells produced more T cells and showed increased functional volume in the thymus glands.

Calorie restriction

Calorie restriction also reduced the number of free radicals in the body, which has a direct impact on cellular function. In addition, researchers found that calorie restriction reduced the activity of a gene called Pla2g7, which is involved in the production of inflammation. It is also a key gene that could be harnessed to improve human health. However, scientists are still unsure of whether the gene affects calorie restriction’s overall effects.

The health of the thymus

Another study at Yale University School of Medicine examined the effects of moderate calorie restriction on human immune cells. Researchers studied the thymus glands of both the calorie restriction and control groups. The researchers found that calorie restriction improved the health of the thymus. The thymus is a fat-storing organ in the body. The gland produces immune system T cells and accumulates fat with age. It is also more susceptible to infection and cold.

Functional volume

In addition, researchers observed that the thymus glands of the calorie-restriction group had increased functional volume, meaning that they produced more T cells. The thymus glands of the control group did not have any change in the functional volume. However, the calorie-restricted participants had larger thymuses than the control group at the beginning of the study. This was likely due to the calorie restriction’s effects on the immune cells.

Calorie restriction also decreased the amount of fat that was found in the thymus glands. Researchers also found that the calorie-restricted mice were less likely to develop fatty liver disease.
